There are still systemic, gendered, and ecological blind spots in how we design for scientific fieldwork, particularly in polar environments.
The Gorgoneion project emerged from the lived experience of field researchers and responds to the practical and health-related challenges women face, such as relieving themselves or managing menstruation in extreme conditions.
These overlooked needs can lead to long-term physical harm and reinforce exclusionary dynamics. Gorgoneion develops fieldwear prototypes that prioritize dignity, safety, and ecological responsibility.
Designed and produced entirely in France using sustainable methods, the garments were tested at Princess Elisabeth Station and refined based on user feedback.
This presentation will highlight how inclusive design can foster safer, more efficient, and more equitable research environments.
We call for increased visibility and support of such grassroots innovations in shaping the future of polar science.
